Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

After a full day of errands and a long grocery shopping trip, the last thing I want to do is cook a big meal with a thousand dishes to clean.  So, when in doubt, I turn to Pinterest to find something quick and easy to make.

Here is my version of the recipe which I have decided to call Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes.


CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOES

  • 6 hoagie rolls
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • ¼ – ½ cup light cream
  • ¼ – ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Spices: Salt, pepper, rosemary, basil, oregano, chili powder, all spice (just a pinch)
  • 3 slices pepper jack cheese (or ½ cup grated)
  • Optional Topping: Hot sauce and jalapenos

*Please note I make these with love, meaning all measurements are approximateFor the spices, I use between ½ tsp – 1 tsp and adjust for flavor.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Brown ground beef in a large skillet.  Add salt and pepper to season.  Once the beef has browned, add in chopped onions and green peppers to soften.
  2. While meat is browning, melt butter in medium sauce pan.  Once melted, add sliced mushrooms.  Cook until browned.
  3. Add flour to mushrooms until coated.  Slowly add in cream and broth, stirring constantly until desired consistency is reached. If you wish to skip making homemade mushroom soup, you can always use it from a can.
  4. Add your mushroom soup to the meat mixture.  Add cheese on top, allow to melt and mix in.
  5. Add the beef mixture to the hoagie rolls.
  6. Serve with potato chips on the side.

I love this recipe for a quick and easy meal to make.  It reminds me of a creamy Philly cheesesteak which is one of my favorite sandwiches.  As someone who hates doing dishes, this meal thankfully only uses two pans, which make for an easy clean up.  If you follow the original recipe, it uses canned cream of mushroom soup which could save you cleaning one extra pan if that is preferred.

The only thing I felt was missing was something that gave it a little “pop”.  I’m always looking for that secret ingredient to give a meal some depth and flavor.  I think this could use some hot sauce or fresh jalapenos on top to give it some spicy crunch.  I also saw someone else’s recommendation on the original recipe to toast the hoagie buns with butter, which could help with flavor.  I would be curious to try these on two slices of Texas toast next time.

Overall, I will definitely be adding these to my rotation of quick meals to make on a busy night.
