One Pot Bolognese Orzo

I have had this Orzo Bolognese recipe pinned to my Pinterest page for a while now and I just got around to trying it. I’m not quite sure what took me so long because this recipe is fabulous for a night when you need something quick, yet filling. This recipe is brought to you by recipetineats and she is not lying when she says this is a one pot meal you can make in 20 minutes!

ONE POT BOLOGNESE ORZO

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 6oz tomato paste
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp instant coffee
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 4-5 cups veggie broth
  • 1 lb dried orzo

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Melt butter in large dutch oven. Cook ground beef until completely browned.
  2. Add onions and cook 3-5 minutes until translucent.
  3. Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, all spices, and veggie broth. Bring to a boil.
  4. Pour in dried orzo and cook 10-12 minutes until liquid is completely absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent orzo from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  5. Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top and serve.

If you have read any of my other blog posts, you know that I absolutely hate washing dishes after cooking a meal. Many recipes claim they are one pot but still require you to prep food in others making for many dishes to wash after dinner. This recipe though is truly one pot and that is why I love it! I use this pot from Amazon Basics, which is a perfect size.

I added my own secret ingredients, that are now not so secret, which is adding a scoop of instant coffee and a little bit of cinnamon. It gives a richness to the sauce and balances out the acidity of the tomato paste. I use the same approach when I am making Skyline chili.

Overall, this recipe gives you a cozy feeling and would be great for a chilly fall evening. It makes enough for eight people so for our family we have plenty of leftovers. It honestly takes about 20 minutes to make, less than 5 minutes to eat, and even less time to clean up. If you want something different than your typically spaghetti and meatballs, this is a great alternative with very little effort.
